Met Opera’s ‘La Traviata,’ Starring Diana Damrau, Set For PBS In Early April

Verdi’s “La Traviata” will be showcased on PBS as part of the Great Performances at the Met. The broadcast is set for April 5, 2019 at 9 p.m.

The opera showcases Diana Damrau as the tragic heroine in Michael Mayer’s new production. Juan Diego Flórez is Alfredo while Quinn Kelsey is his father Germont. The performance was hosted by Anita Rachvelishvili. Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Met Opera’s music director, conducts the performance.

Of the second performance of this particular run, OperaWire’s review noted “Audiences who wanted something more traditional visually will be happy with this new “Traviata,” though one hopes that the clumsiness of the staging and the exaggerated color scheme of the costumes will get some sort of revisions for future iterations. As for this current run of performances, Diana Damrau makes it worth it on her own. She should be fascinating in HD.”

Next up on the PBS Great Performances showcases from the Metropolitan Opera will be “Adriana Lecouvreur,” “La Fille du Régiment,” “Carmen,” “Die Walküre,” and “Dialogues des Carmélites” follow thereafter.
