Mercury Opera To Stage ‘La Bohème’ In Edmonton With NYC Run In The Works

By David Salazar

The Mercury Opera will showcase Puccini’s “La Bohème” at the Chez Pierre Cabaret starting on Feb. 27, 2019.

The company is known for showcasing opera in new light and this version of the famed opera is set in NYC’s Alphabet City around 1979. In this context, Marcello and Rodolfo remain an artist and writer, respectively, but Schaunard is a drag Queen and Colline is a hip hop artist.

The production is set to star Adam Fisher, Michaela Chiste, Lukas Johan, Andrea Gedrasik, Roland Burks, Ian Fundytus, Krista Mulbery, and Rafael Josef. The chamber orchestra will be led by Adam Szmidt. Darcia Parada conducts the production, which includes costumes by Natasha Lazarovic. Parada told OperaWire that the production is likely to come to New York in the near future, though the location for the production is “top secret.”

The run is set to take place until March 9, 2019.

The Mercury Opera was first established in New York City back in 2000 and has staged a number of operas over the years. In March 2018, the company put on Verdi’s “La Traviata,” and then took on “Carmen” in Alberta.
