
Manon Ogwen Parry, Redmond Sanders & Seohyun Go Named Finalists of 2025 Gold Medal Competition
By David SalazarGuildhall School of Music & Drama has announced the finalists for its 2025 Gold Medal competition, the institution’s most prestigious prize for musicians. The final is set to take place on Thursday, May 8 at Barbican Hall.
This year’s finalists are Manon Ogwen Parry (soprano), Redmond Sanders (baritone), and Seohyun Go (soprano).
Parry will be accompanied by pianist Zany Denyer and they will take on such works as “Pan ddaw’r Nos” (When night falls) by Meirion Williams; “Nuit D’etoiles” by Debussy; “Ganymed” from “Goethe-Leider, No 50” by Wolf; and “Lorelei” by Clara Schumann. In the second half, accompanied by the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, she will perform “Cäcilie” from “4 Lieder,” by Richard Strauss’ “Prendi, per me sei libero” from “L’Elisir d’Amore;” and “No word from Tom… I go to him” from “The Rake’s Progress.”
Sanders, accompanied by pianist Sooyeon Baik, will present a program featuring “Sea Fever” by Ireland; “Erlkönig,” D328 by Schubert; “Nyet, tolko tot, kto znal” by Tchaikovsky; and “The Green-Eyed Dragon” by Wolseley Charles.
With the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, Sanders will perform “Father’s aria” from “Hansel and Gretel;” “Hai già vinta la causa” from “Le Nozze di Figaro;” “O Carlo, ascolta” from “Don Carlo;” and “Chanson à boire” from “Don Quichotte à Dulcinée.”
Finally, Go’s program, accompanied by Sooyeon Baik, features “Hat dich die Liebe berührt” by Marx; “Oh! quand je dors” by Liszt; “돌아가는꽃” (Returning Flower) by 임태규 (Taekyu Lim); “I fauni” from “Deità silvane” by Respighi; and “Pierrot Dandy” by Marx. In the second half, she will interpret “Amor” from “Brentano Lieder;” “Non mi dir, bell’idol mio” from “Don Giovanni;” and “Je réchauffe les bons” from “L’enfant et les sortilèges.”
During the jury’s deliberation, the evening will also feature the world premiere of “HOLME” by alumnus Ben Pease Barton, supported by the Jane Manning – Anthony Payne Award. The piece will be performed by Guildhall mezzo-soprano Karima El Demerdasch.
Judging the competition will be Armin Zanner (Guildhall School’s Vice-Principal & Director of Music), baritone Christopher Maltman, Maria Mot (Director of MWA Management), and Rosemary Joshua (Artistic Director of Dutch National Opera Studio).
