Guildhall School of Music & Drama Unveils Summer 2024 Slate

Guildhall School of Music & Drama has unveiled its summer 2024. Here is a rundown of the vocal performances on offer.

“Vocal at Six: Richard Strauss” will feature performances of the famed composer to commemorate the 75th anniversary of his death. Eugene Asti will be the accompanist on the evening.

Performance Date: March 13, 2024

Nicky Spence OBE & Dylan Perez will present a fundraising concert.

Performance Date: May 19, 2024

Next is the final round of the competition for the Susan Longfield Award, held for mezzo-sopranos and sopranos.

Performance Date: March 20, 2024

Spring Opera Scenes will be directed by Oliver Platt and conducted by Liz Rowe. Audiences can expect excerpts from operas by Rossini, Debussy, and Mozart, among others. Performers include Biquing Zhang, Joshua Saunders, Julia Merino, Dominic Lee, Samantha Hargreaves, Georgie Malcolm, Tom McGowan, Hector Bloggs, Mariana Fernandes, Lydia Shariff, Karima El Demerdasch, and Sang Eup Son.

Performance Date: March 21 – 26, 2024

Then comes the “Vocal Scenes” featuring students from the Vocal Studies department under the musical direction of Alexander Ingram and stage direction of Guido Martin-Brandis.

Soprano Ana-Carmen Balestra gives her debut Wigmore Hall Recital following her 2023 Guildhall Wigmore Prize. She is accompanied by Aleksandra Myslek.

Performance Date: April 3, 2024

The London Schools Symphony Orchestra performs a program featuring works by Anna Meredith, Janácek, and Bartók’s “Bluebeard’s Castle.” The opera stars Shana Moron-Caravel and Alaric Green. Dominic Wheller and Enyi Okpara conduct the program.

Performance Date: April 15, 2024

Next is the final round of the competition for the Keith Bonnington Award, held for tenors, countertenors, baritones, and basses.

Performance Date: May 3, 2024

“Voiceworks: Contemporary Collaboration” will feature seven premieres of new works by postgraduate composers, writers, singers, and musicians.

Performance Date: May 9, 2024

“Voiceworks: Here My Song” features songs developed with living composers Isabelle Aboulker, Jonathan Dove, John Musto, and Roderick Williams. Lana Bode leads the performance.

Performance Date: May 10, 2024

Vocal ensemble EXAUDI takes the stage to perform works written by postgraduate composers.

Performance Date: May 13, 2024

Finalists will compete for the Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors Vocal Prize.

Performance Date: May 20, 2024

John Ramster directs “Alcina.” The opera stars Ana-Carmen Balestra, Yolisa Ngwexana, Samantha Hargreaves, Shana Moron-Caravel, Julia Sanchez Merino, Jonah Halton, Emyr Jones, and Alaric Green. James Henshaw conducts.

Performance Date: June 3-10, 2024

“Opera Makers” features new works by new composers in Guildhall’s MA in Opera Making & Writing. Ashley Dean directs and Dominic Wheeler conducts “The Casserole” by Evan Snyder and Hannah Hayden; “Sea Story” by Will Gardner and Sara Clifford; and “Ursa Minor” by Zygmund De Somogyi and Alexia Peniguel.

Performance Date: June 20 – 25, 2024

Postgraduate students will present Vocal Scenes under conductor Linnhe Robertson and director Liz Marcus.

Performance Date: June 26, 2024
