Malmö Opera has named Helena Röhr the next Artistic Director of Operaverkstan, Malmö Opera’s experimental platform, that focuses on creating works for young audiences and family audiences

Röhr, who recently directed “Il Trovatore” at Stadttheater Giessen and “Alcina” at Confidencen, begins her tenure in May 2026, taking over for Maria Sundqvist, who has led the institution since 2002 and will retire this season.

“Is there a better place to develop opera for children and young people than a workshop? Operaverkstan has a wonderful history, and it will be a joy to carry it forward. To investigate, develop, and explore opera in our time. To offer inspiration, entertainment, and new ideas to audiences. It will be very exciting to join Operaverkstan!”  Röhr said per an official press release.

Before joining Malmö Opera, Röhr will direct “HOMO OECONOMICUS,” a new opera she co-created with composer Andrea Tarrodi, at Hannover Staatsoper.
