Malmö Opera Unveils 2025-26 Season

Malmö Opera has revealed its 2025-26 season.

The season opens with “Chicago” starring Åsa Fång and Jenny Holmgren as Velma Kelly. Roxie Hart is portrayed by Leila Jung and Caroline Gustafsson, while Billy Flynn is performed by Richard Hamrin and Oscar Pierrou Lindén. Johan Siberg conducts and Ronny Danielsson directs.

Performance Dates: Sept. 12, 2025 – Jan. 4, 2026


David T. Little and Anne Waldman’s “Black Lodge” gets a showcase with Timur Bekbosunov performing both in the film and on stage, Matthew Setzer on guitar, Andrew Lessman on drums, Milo Talwani on keyboard, and Hannah Dexter on bass for the stage performances. Michael Joseph McQuilken directs the film and stage performance.

Performance Dates: Oct. 21 – Nov. 22, 2025


Lohengrin” will be headlined by Joachim Bäckström as Lohengrin, alongside Sabina Bisholt as Elsa, Nicolai Elsberg as King Heinrich, John Lundgren as Telramund, Martina Dike as Ortrud, and Luthando Qave as the King’s Herald. Patrick Ringborg conducts and Charlotte Engelkes directs.

Performance Dates: Oct. 28  – Dec. 12, 2025


Sherlock och Sångerskan” will be based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Scandal in Bohemia, with music by Lars Ljungberg and a libretto by Maria Sundqvist. It will be conducted by Rebecca Elsgard and directed by Johan Hwatz.

Performance Dates: November 14 – December 20, 2025


Cláudia Ribas stars as “Carmen” alongside Matthew White as Don José, Luthando Qave as Escamillo, and Kelebogile Besong as Micaëla. The opera will be conducted by Anna Skryleva and Elena Mitrevska. Katharina Thoma directs.

Performance Dates: Jan. 17 – March 21, 2026


The musical “Come from Away” comes next in a production by Sissela Kyle. Johan Bergman conducts a cast starring Gunilla Backman as Diane, Sharon Dyall as Hannah, Kerstin Hilldén as Janice, and Åsa Fång as Beulah.

Performance Dates: Feb. 27 – June 7, 2026


LOL – Laughing Out Lonely” will be headlined by countertenor Morten Grove Frandsen. The performance explores the darkest corners of the internet, where misogynists, racists, self-harmers, and other marginalized individuals have formed an absurd community. The music is by Matilde Böcher and Asger Kudahl, with direction Louise Beck.

Performance Dates: March 31 – May 8, 2026


“Opera Gala – Music from the 80s” features a blend of classical favorites from the 1680s to the 1980s alongside the greatest pop hits from the 80s. The performance will be conducted by Fredrik Burstedt and directed by Ylva Kihlberg.

Askungen” (Cinderella) will be based on Rossini’s comic opera, with a libretto by Jacopo Ferretti. It will be conducted by Annika Bjelk and directed by Erik Söderblom.

Performance Dates: September 20 – November 30, 2025


Elove” will feature music, lyrics, and libretto by Wayland Pickard, with additional lyrics by Sherry Netherland and Deborah Johnson, and arrangements by Per Larsson. The work is directed by Mattias Ermedahl.

Performance Dates: February 14 – April 26, 2026


Malmö Opera on a Truck” will be performed across various locations, with further details to be announced.

Performance Dates: May 22 – June 17, 2026


There will also be a Puccini Gala with Giordano Bellinicampi conducting.

Måndag är Fiskbullensdag” will be a new production of Operaverkstans, a lively and entertaining story about two women working in a school kitchen, directed by Mia Ringblom Hjertner.

Concerts

The company will present “Carmen” at the Copenhagen Opera Festival.

There will be a showcase of “Christmas Tree Dance with the Opera.”
