Komische Oper Berlin Unveils 2022-23 Season

The Komische Oper Berlin has unveiled its 2022-23 season.

New Productions

The season kicks off with “Intoleranza 1960” with Sean Panikkar, Gloria Rehm, Deniz Uzun, Tom erik Lie, Joseine Mindus, and Ilse Ritter. Gabriel Feltz conducts a production designed by Marco Storman.

Performance Dates: Sept. 23 – Oct. 3, 2022

“Pippi Langstrumpf” will be headlined by Devi-Ananda Dahm, Maria-Danaé Bansen, Caren van Oijen, Bernd Stempel, and Carsten Sabrowski, among others. Matthew Toogood conducts a production by Dagmar Manzel.

Performance Dates:  Nov. 6, 2022 – Jan. 15, 2023 

Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer” will star Günter Papendell, Jens Larsen, Tijl Faveyts, Ambur Braid, and Brendan Gunnell. Herbert Frisch directs while Dirk Kaftan conducts.

Performance Dates: Nov. 27 – Dec. 29, 2022

Offenbach’s “Oyayaye Fortunios Lied” will star Burghart Klaußer, Susan Zarrabi, and Hagen Matzeit. Max Hopp directs with Adrien Perruchon conducting.

Performance Dates:  Dec. 18-30, 2022

There will also be a gala celebrating the company’s 75th anniversary season. Soloists will be announced at a later date.

 “Die Rache der Fledermaus” stars Tobias Bonn, Christoph Marti, Franz Frickel, and Gabriela Ryffel, among others. Kai Tietje conducts while Stefan Huber directs.

Performance Dates:  Feb. 10 – March 3, 2023

Kurt Weill’s “Tom Sawyer” will star Tom Schimon, Caren van Oijen, Carsten Sabrowski, Michael heller, and Christoph Späth. Kai Tietje conducts while Tobias Ribitzki directs.

Performance Dates:  Feb. 18 – April 29, 2023

Kirill Serebrennikov directs “Così fan tutte” with Erina Yashima conducting. Nadja Mchantaf, Penny Sofroniadou, Deniz Uzun, Susan Zarrabi, Hubert Zapiór, Dominik Köninger, and Alma Sadé headline the production.

Performance Dates:  March 11- May 18, 2023

The company will present “Und mit Morgen Könnt ihr Mich,” which will feature music by Kurt Weill. Katharine Mehrling stars. Kai Tietje conducts with Barrie Kosky directing.

Performance Dates:  March 26 – June 2, 2023

Liv Redpath, Huw Montague Rendall, Karolina Gumos, Tijl Faveyts, and Karsten Küsters headline “Hamlet.” Marie Jacquot and Erina Yashima conduct. Nadja Loschky directs.

Performance Dates:  April 16 – June 7, 2023

Händel’s “Jephta” will be presented in a performance conducted by Christian Curnyn. Andrew Staples, Ezgi Kutlu, Alexandra Hutton, Key’mon Murrah, and Philipp Meierhöfer headline the cast.

Performance Dates:  May 7, 2023

Alex Ranisch directs “Saul.” David Bates conducts a cast starring Luca Tittoto, Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, Rupert Charlesworth, and Nadja Mchantaf, among others.

Performance Dates:  May 27 – June 10, 2023

The company will present Barry Kosky’s “Falstaff” under Henrik Nánási. Scott Hendriks, Günter Papendell, Caspar Singh, Yaritza Véliz, and Penny Sofroniadou headline the cast.

“The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” will be conducted by Roland Kluttig. Nadine Weissman, Ivan Tursic, Jens Larsen, Eric Greene, and Alma Sadé headline the cast.

Concerts

James Gaffigan will lead Max Hopp and Nadja Mchantaf in “Frankenstein.” The showcase will feature music by Humperdinck, Haydn, Gruber, Bernstein, and De Falla.

Performance Date:  Jan. 1, 2023

Gaffigan will lead “Transatlantic,” a performance with Tom Erik Lie featuring music by Foss, Hindemith, Daigger, and Barber.

Performance Date:  Feb. 24, 2023 

Wallis Giunta will headline a program of music by Andriessen, Walker, Berio, and Mahler. Brand Keith Brown conducts.

Performance Date:  March 31, 2023

Chamber Music

There will be a concert featuring the Opernstudio artists. The program will feature music by de Frumerie, Stenhammer, and Lindblad.

Performance Date:  Nov. 7, 2022

There will be a concert focused on music by Gluck, Abel, and Händel with such soloists as Karolina Gumos with numerous instrumentalists.

Performance Date:  May 28, 2023

Tenor Ivan Tursic will perform music by Britten, Rebecca Clarke, and Vaughan Williams.

Performance Date:  May 29, 2023
