Anna Netrebko’s Management Responds to Protest Reports

Anna Netrebko’s management has released a statement regarding the protest held at Wiesbaden before her performance of Puccini’s “Turandot” on May 4.

In a statement, her management said, “Anna Netrebko gave a memorable performance of Puccini’s ‘Turandot’ last night at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden’s International May Festival.”

“The Deutsche Presse-Agentur has been reporting that around 400 demonstrators participated in peaceful protests across the road from the theatre. This has been echoed by numerous German-speaking media, relying on the wire service’s research. On the contrary, this is factually incorrect and easily verifiable if the DPA had relied on more than one source. (We also dispute the revised figures DPA made after we contacted them.)”

The statement included a video of the protest taken 20 minutes before the performance.

Last year Netrebko also drew protests in Wiesbaden due to her past ties to Putin. In 2022, the soprano condemned the war in Ukraine on several occasions and distanced herself from Putin.

Netrebko performs her second and final, sold-out performance of “Turandot” in Wiesbaden on May 8 and will return to the Teatro alla Scala for eight sold-out performances of a new production of “Turandot.”
