Kisma Jordan, Joelle Lamarra, & Dr. Michael Preacely Headline Season Finale of ‘Music as the Message: SING TOGETHER, CHILDREN!’

By Logan Martell

On June 13, 2021, The American Opera Project, in partnership with WQXR, and in association with Opera on Tap, will present the season finale of “Music as the Message: SING TOGETHER, CHILDREN!”

Adrienne Danrich invites audiences into her home via Zoom for a concert of songs, poems, and hymns which celebrate the accomplishment of African-American artists. The MaM choir will be joined by guest artists Kisma Jordan, Joelle Lamarre, and Dr. Michael Preacely. In honor of Juneteenth, 89 year-old Rose-Marie Bell will share her personal experiences growing up as a Black woman in the early 20th century.

The concert will also include a newly-commissioned arrangement of “Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom” by composer Nikeiru Okoye.

AOP will give half of all donations raised to Friends of the Children New York and Music Kitchen, two nonprofits which support youths in homeless shelter through mentorship and music therapy.
