Sonnambula to Present Modern Premiere of Four Airs by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre
By David SalazarEarly music ensemble Sonnambula will give the modern premiere of four airs by Baroque composer Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre on Nov. 19 at St. Paul’s Chapel at Columbia University in New York.
Elizabeth Weinfield, a Juilliard musicology professor and the artistic director of Sonnambula, was the first to closely examine the works after learning that the Morgan Library & Museum had acquired the 1712 treatise “Les Amusemens de Monseigneur le Duc de Bretagne” in 2022. The airs were written for the court at Versailles and have gone unresearched, unrecorded, and unperformed for three centuries since their publication.
The pieces were commissioned for the young great grandson of King Louis XIV to accompany courtly educational games.
Sonnambula, which Weinfield leads on viola da gamba, will be joined by mezzo soprano Chloe Holgate. The program also includes works by Marin Marais, François Couperin, and Michel Richard Delalande, along with a world premiere by Stephen Anthony Weinfield.
A panel discussion on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. at Columbia’s Maison Française will feature Weinfield, the Morgan’s Curator of Music Manuscripts and Printed Music Robinson McClellan, and scholars Susan Boynton, Anne Higonnet, and Rebecca Cypess.
“Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre is a fascinating woman—a composer of the highest caliber, she was also navigating the highly competitive, constantly shifting boundaries of the Versailles court, and did so while garnering respect,” said Elizabeth Weinfield, artistic director of Sonnambula, per an official press release. “Discoveries like this shift the cultural needle and disrupt masculine narratives that have dominated early music history for far too long, and we are so excited to be bringing her music to life for modern audiences.”
The concert kicks off at 6 p.m. local time.
