Kelly Guerra to Headline Opera Southwest’s ‘Dolores’

By David Salazar

Opera Southwest will present “Dolores” this October.

The opera, which explores the story of civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, will take the stage of the National Hispanic Cultural Center-Journal Theatre on Oct. 26, 31, and Nov. 2, 2025. The work is set in 1968 during the Delano grape strike’s third year as farmworkers in California built a unified movement to overcome racial and linguistic barriers.

The opera by Nicolás Lell Benavides and Marella Martin Koch will star Kelly Guerra, who, as of this writing, is in the midst of performing the role with West Edge Opera where the opera premiered on August 2 as part of that company’s Aperture Program. Guerra is joined by Sergio Martinez, Alex Boyer, Ingela Onstad, Cecilia Violetta López, Reese Cruz, Rolfe Dauz, and Brian Cheney.

Anthony Barrese conducts and Octavio Cardenas directs.
