Jonathan Berger’s ‘Leonardo’ To Have World Premiere

By David Salazar

Jonathan Berger’s “Leonardo” is set to have its world premiere on April 6, 2019 at 92Y.

The opera, which is the first such commission from 92Y, will feature the St. Lawrence String Quartet and baritone Tyler Duncan singing texts directly from Leonardo Da Vinci’s notebooks.

The work will feature designs by Gabriel Calatrava with staging and direction from Kevin Newbury. Paul Haas will conduct the score.

Berger is no stranger to chamber opera, having created “My Lai,” which was showcased that BAM New Wave in 2017. He also created the “Visitations” trilogy, which was a major part of the 2014 Prototype Festival.

In addition to the opera’s premiere, 92Y will host a symposium entitled “The Soul of Leonardo da Vinci” in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the legendary artist’s death.
