Jonas Kaufmann, Elīna Garanča, Luca Salsi, Lisette Oropesa, Elena Stikhina, Asmik Grigorian Lead Salzburg Festival’s 2022 Season

The Salzburg Festival has announced its 2022 season, featuring eight operas, concerts, and international opera stars.

For the purpose of this article we will focus on the vocal works only.

Operas 

The season opens with Romeo Castellucci’s production of Béla Bartók’s “Bluebeard’s Castle.” The opera stars Mika Kares and Aušrinė Stundytė in the lead roles, alongside soprano Nadezhda Pavlova and contralto Helena Rasker. Teodor Currentzis conducts. The performance features the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, musicAeterna Choir, Bachchor Salzburg, and Salzburger Festspiele und Theater Kinderchor.

Performance Dates: July 26 – Aug. 20, 2022

Next up is a concert performance of Wolfgang Rihm’s chamber opera “Jakob Lenz.” Georg Nigl, Damien Pass, and John Daszak star alongside conductor Maxime Pascal.

Performance Date: July 27, 2022

Misha Kiria, Asmik Grigorian, Enkelejda Shkosa, Alexey Neklyudov, Dean Power, Lavinia Bini, Manel Esteve, Brindley Sherratt, Iurii Samoilov, Roman Burdenko, Joshua Guerrero, Andrea Giovannini, Karita Mattila, Hanna Schwarz, Giulia Semenzato, and Daryl Freedman star in Puccini’s “Il Trittico.” Franz Welser-Möst conducts a production by Christof Loy. The opera is a co-production with the Opéra national de Paris.

Performance Dates: July 29 – Aug. 21, 2022

Tareq Nazmi performs Sarastro, Mauro Peter sings Tamino, Regula Mühlemann interprets Pamina, and Brenda Rae and Jasmin Delfs portray Die Königin der Nacht in Lydia Steier’s production of Mozart’s popular singspiel “Die Zauberflöte.” Ilse Eerens, Sophie Rennert, Noa Beinart, Michael Nagl, Maria Nazarova, Peter Tantsits, Henning von Schulman, Simon Bode, and Roland Koch round out the cast with Joana Mallwitz conducting.

Performance Dates: July 30 – Aug. 27, 2022

Rossini’s popular opera “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” will be performed in a production by Rolando Villazón and will star Edgardo Rocha in the role of Count Almaviva, Cecilia Bartoli as Rosina, Alessandro Corbelli as Bartolo, Ildar Abdrazakov in the role of Basilio, José Coca Loza as Fiorello, Arturo Brachetti as Arturo, and Nicola Alaimo in the title role. Gianluca Capuano conducts Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco.

Leoš Janáček’s “Káťa Kabanová” spotlights Jens Larsen, David Butt Philip, Evelyn Herlitzius, Jaroslav Březina, Benjamin Hulett, Jarmila Balážová, Michael Mofidian, and Corinne Winters in the title role. Jakub Hrůša conducts a production by Barrie Kosky.

Performance Dates: Aug. 7 – 29, 2022

Roberto Tagliavini, Anita Rachvelishvili, Elena Stikhina, Piotr Beczała, Erwin Schrott and Luca Salsi star in the Shirin Neshat’s production of Verdi’s “Aida.” Alain Altinoglu conducts the Wiener Philharmoniker. The opera also includes the Konzertvereinigung Wiener Staatsopernchor.

Performance Dates: Aug. 12 – 30, 2022

A concert performance of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” showcases Ludovic Tézier as Lord Enrico Ashton, Benjamin Bernheim as Sir Edgardo, Roberto Tagliavini as Raimondo, and Lisette Oropesa in the title role. Daniele Rustioni conducts.

Bass Dmitry Ulyanov performs works by Shostakovich alongside Teodor Currentzis and musicAeterna Choir.

Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists perform various works alongside conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner.

Mathias Vidal, Mari Eriksmoen, Paula Murrihy, Nikola Hillebrand, and Matthias Winckhler perform oratorio “Abramo ed Isacco” alongside conductor Václav Luks and the Collegium Vocale 1704.

Isabelle Huppert and vocal soloists present Honneger’s “Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher” alongside conductor Maxime Pascal.

Performance date: July 24, 2022

Carolyn Sampson, Marianne Beate Kielland, Bogdan Volkov, and Peter Kellner present works by Haydn and Mozart. Andrew Manze conducts.

Rachel Redmond, Raffaele Pe, Martin Platz, and Matthias Winckhler perform Handel’s oratorio “Messiah” alongside conductor Jordi Savall.
