Joachim Bäckström & Sabina Bisholt to Headline Malmö Opera’s ‘Lohengrin’

Malmö Opera has announced that it will present “Lohengrin” this fall.

The Wagner opera hits the stage on Oct. 26, 2025 in a production directed by Charlotte Engelkes who noted in a press release that “I think fairy tales have a power to teach. The story of the Swan Knight that Elsa saw in her dream, and who later comes to save her, is not just fantasy, but a story filled with existential questions about how we ourselves create our lives. That faith and doubt live within us at the same time is both fresh and scenically entertaining… Wagner for me has always been a source of playfulness in a divine musical world, where relationships unfold within ourselves to develop us sensually and spiritually.”

The opera stars Joachim Bäckström in the title role. The tenor broke out with the company back in 2010 in “Madame Butterfly” and has since performed at the Royal Swedish Opera, Royal Danish Opera, and Finnish National Opera.

Joining him is soprano Sabina Bisholt as Elsa and John Lundgren as Friedrich von Telramund. Martina Dike is Ortrud.

Patrick Ringborg conducts the work.

The opera runs through Dec. 14, 2025.

The company has yet to reveal its slate for the 2025-26 season, though its website suggests that “Carmen 2026” and “Chicago” are incoming.
