Inaugural ‘Muffled Voices’ Festival Announced

The first ever “Muffled Voices” festival is set to give the Russian premieres of three American operas by composers Missy Mazzoli, Amy Beach, and Anne LeBaron.

Mazzoli’s “Proving Up,” with a libretto by Royce Vavrek, Beach’s “Cabildo,” featuring a libretto by Nan Bagby Stephens, and  LeBaron and Thulani Davis’ “Blue Calls Set You Free” are among the ten chamber operas presented in various Russian cities from Feb. to Aug. 2024 with live broadcasts worldwide.

The festival’s lineup also includes Tatiana Chudova’s “Russian Women” and “Dream,” “The Head of Professor Dowell,” and “Von Meck-Tchaikovsky,” Alina Nebykova’s “Zhdana,” Anna Kuzmina’s “Dreams and Not Dreams,” and Alina Podzorova’s “Periodic Table.”

Featured performers include artistic director Yulia Petrachuk, Olga Seliverstova, Polina Sharovarova, Alexandra Kovalevch, David Sanikidze, Ilya Khardikov, Stanislav Lee, and Denis Sedov.  Elizaveta Korneeva serves as stage director.

The festival will open on Feb. 7, at the Moscow International House of Music with “Cabildo.” More dates and performers will be announced at a later date.
