Harlem Collective Opera Launches ‘The Black Composer Project’
By Afton MarkayThe Harlem Collective Opera has announced its newest initiative, “The Black Composer Project.”
The Project is a multi-season artistic, educational, and recording initiative dedicated to preserving, performing, and promoting the extraordinary works of Black classical composers. While composers like Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, H. Leslie Adams, George Walker, Howard Swanson, William Grant Still, and many others have shaped American musical history, much of their vocal repertoire remains underperformed and underrepresented on concert stages around the world. “The Black Composer Project” seeks to change that.
Through performances, recordings, educational programs, artist residencies, community partnerships, and scholarly engagement, Harlem Collective Opera is building a platform that celebrates these composers while expanding access to classical music for new audiences. Current programming includes a Resident Artist Program, the Harlem Boys Choir and Harlem Chamber Orchestra, along with other endeavors.
The Harlem Collective Opera is based in Harlem, NY and was founded by Artistic Director Jarvus Ricardo Hester.
