Grand Théâtre de Geneve to Host World Premiere of Christian Jost’s New Opera ‘Voyage vers l’Espoir’

By Afton Wooten

German composer Christian Jost’s new opera “Voyage vers l’Espoir” (“Journey of Hope”) will make its world premiere at the Grand Théâtre de Geneve.

Káta Weber’s libretto is based on Xavier Koller’s Academy Award-winning film of the same name. The story explores the experience of “displacement, migration, and the search for a promised land” by following a Kurdish family who abandoned their life to reach Switzerland and find “paradise.”

The cast stars Turkish baritone Kartal Karagedik and Canadian/Tunisian mezzo-soprano Rihab Chaieb. They are joined by Ivan Thirion, Denzil Delaere,  Julieth Lozano, and  Omar Mancini. Gabriel Feltz leads the singers and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Kornél Mundruczó directs.

The world premiere will take place at the Grand Théâtre de Geneve on March 28, with showings through April 4. A family-suggested production will be held on April 2.
