Festival Amazonas de Opera Cancels 26th Edition

By Francisco Salazar

The Festival Amazonas de Opera has canceled its 26th edition.

The festival, which was held in Manaus, Brazil, was canceled by the Secretaría de Cultura and Economía Creativa. The reason for its canceling was due to the economic situation with the Secretaria noting that they were attempting to reduce costs following an understanding that fiscal balance is a priority for future advances in the public administration of the Amazonas.

In recent months the Secretaría has sought to raise funds from the private sector to make the festival viable. However, it was unsuccessful.

Last year the festival was held in April and May and included performances of “Anna Bolena” and “Peter Grimes,” among others.
