English Touring Opera Music Director Steps Down

English Touring Opera (ETO) Music Director Gerry Cornelius has announced that he will step down from his position in October 2026 after five years in the role.
Cornelius, who joined ETO in April 2021, will step down following the opening of ETO’s Autumn season in Sheffield on October 10 and is set to return as a guest conductor for the Spring 2027 production of “Tosca” alongside ETO Artistic Director and CEO Robin Norton-Hale.
Cornelius’ tenure began with Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Golden Cockerel” back in 2021 and since then, he has led such operas as “La bohème,” “Ottone,” “Lucrezia Borgia,” “Manon Lescaut,” “Blond Eckbert,” “The Rape of Lucretia,” and “Pagliacci.”
“It is bittersweet to be leaving, but I feel the time is right for a new musician to take the helm at ETO. I have been proud to work on eight brilliant productions alongside outstanding singers, wonderful colleagues, orchestral musicians and directors,” Cornelius, whose guest conducting credits include English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, the Hallé, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, the Bolshoi in Moscow, the Luxembourg Philharmonic, and the Opera Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, among others, noted, per an official press release.
The company will begin an open recruitment process for his successor imminently, with the aim of having a new Music Director in place by the end of 2026.
