Documents Report Angela Gheorghiu Signed Commitment to Romania’s Securitate in 1987

Following an investigation by the researcher, Emilian Tilibașa, accredited by the National Council for the Study of Security Archives (CNSAS), documents have been unearthed that show that Angela Gheorghiu was an informant of Romania’s Securitate.

A report by Romania’s Libertatea showed that “Angela Gheorghiu was recruited in 1987.” However, the document in addition to the commitment only contains an informative note in which the soprano, then a student, praises a colleague from the Patriarch’s choir.

According to the legislation, Gheorghiu was not a collaborator of the Security, because she did not provide information that “denounced activities or attitudes against the communist regime and aimed at restricting fundamental human rights and freedoms.”

According to Stelian Tănase a political scientist, the document was most likely signed “under pressure” or “in a moment of weakness.” He added that she most likely had two choices, “to do harm or not.”

The news comes after Gheorghiu recently canceled her two performances at the Metropolitan Opera due to COVID-19. The soprano next performs in Roma, Italy for a recital.
