Angela Gheorghiu Cancels Both Metropolitan Opera Performances

By Francisco Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for its production of “Tosca.”

The company said that “for the performances of Puccini’s Tosca today, April 8, and Wednesday, April 12, the title role will be sung by Liudmyla Monastyrska.”

The change is due to Angela Gheorghiu testing positive for COVID. According to the soprano, the Met’s policy states that a singer must isolate for 10 days if they have symptoms.

The performances would have seen Gheorghiu return to the Met after an eight-year absence. She noted in a recent New York Times article that she was excited to return because she loved the theater and her audience in New York.

Monastyrska is se to perform alongside Matthew Polenzani and Zeljko Lucic. Domingo Hindoyan conducts the production by Sir. David McVicar.
