MassOpera to Present ‘Alcina’

By David Salazar

MassOpera is set to present “Alcina” this June.

The Händel opera will take the stage of Lowe Auditorium in Boston on June 27 with performances running throughout the 29th.

Hannah Shanefield will direct the production, while Julian Gau will conduct. This interpretation of the work will explore ideas of love, gender, and identity on spectrums with the cast members performing their roles as the gender they identify with. As such, some of the male characters in the opera, who are traditionally performed by women in “pants roles,” will be female identifying in the new context. Per Shanefield, this shift ““makes nearly every relationship in this show queer, and releases us from the binds of oppressive gender roles.”

The opera will star Kayla Kovacs in the title role, Naré Kim as Morgana, Chihiro Asano as Ruggiero, Becca Allen as Bradamante, David Rivera Bozón as Oronte, Cailin Smith as Oberto, and Nathan Halbur as Melisso.

The June 27 and 28 shows start at 7:30 p.m., while the final one on June 29 kicks off at 2 p.m.
