Diana Damrau, Jamie Barton, & Elza van den Heever Among Highlights of London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2019-20 Season

The London Philharmonic Orchestra has announced its slate for the 2019-20 season, which will take place at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.

As per other season announcements, the focus here will be on opera singers and other such vocal showcases.

Things get started with a performance of Verdi’s Requiem with Edward Gardner conducting. Elza van den Heever, Ekaterina Gubanova, Arsen Soghomonyan, and Gabor Bretz will be the soloists.

Performance Date: Oct. 12, 2019

That is followed up by a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” with Vladimir Jurowski at the podium. Sofia Fomina and Sarah Connolly are the soloists.

Performance Date: Oct. 19, 2019

Sir Mark Elder leads a performance of Elgar’s “The Apostles” with Lucy Crowe, Alice Coote, Allan Clayton, Roderick Williams, David Stout, and Brindley Sherratt.

Performance Date: Oct. 26, 2019

Baritone Roderick Williams teams up with Marin Alsop for a performance that includes Butterworth’s “A Shropshire Lad,” Elgar’s “Enigma Variations,” and Walton’s “Belshazzar’s Feast.”

Performance Date: Nov. 9, 2019

Soprano Diana Damrau will take on a few Strauss songs in a concert that will also feature the Prelude of “Tristan und Isolde” as well as Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.

Performance Date: Nov. 13, 2019

Faure’s Requiem gets the spotlight in early 2020 with Bertrand de Billy at the podium. Katerina Tretyakova and Stéphane Degout are the soloists.

Performance Date: Jan. 18, 2020

Wagner’s “Siegfried” gets a performance that starts at 3 p.m. with a cast that includes Torsten Kerl in the title role as well as Elena Pankratova as Brünnhilde. Evgeny Nikitin, Adrian Thompson, Robert Hayward, Brindley Sherratt, Patricia Bardon, and Alina Adamski round out the cast which will be conducted by Jurowski.

Performance Date: Feb. 1, 2020

Jamie Barton will take on a concert that includes Widmann’s Lied for Orchestra, Ravel’s “Schéhérazade,” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3.

Performance Dates: Feb. 22, 2020

Soprano Sally Matthews will sing Dutilleux’s “Le Temps l’Horloge” in a program that also features Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 3.

Performance Date: March 28, 2020

In April, soprano Lise Davidsen and mezzo Angharad Lyddon will be featured on an all-Beethoven program.

Performance Date: April 4, 2020

A performance of Wigglesworth’s “Augenlieder” will feature Sophie Bevan; the program will also include Méhul Symphony No. 1 and Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3.

Performance Date: April 8, 2020

Gardner will lead a performance of Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass with Stuart Skelton, James Creswell, Sara Jakubiak, and Madeleine Shaw.

Performance Date: April 25, 2020
