Death of Classical Announces New Concert Series

By Afton Wooten

Death of Classical has announced its new concert series, “The Light After.”

The new collaboration between Death of Classical, St. John the Divine, and Trinity Church features three evenings of music in the Crypt under the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Chamber groups from Trinity’s acclaimed new music ensemble NOVUS perform.

The first concert includes selection of music by living composers centering on themes of light, life, death and darkness. Programmed are works by Caroline Shaw,  Juhi Bansal, David Lang, Osvaldo Golijov, and Andrew Yee, including a world premiere by Yee.

The next program, “American,” explores the story of our country past and present, featuring Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 “American” interspersed with three works by contemporary American composers, Michi Wiancko, Carlos Simon, and Jessie Montgomery.

The final program, “Vis Aeternitatis” (“The Power of Eternity”), showcases string quartet, flute, lute, and vocals, in a program of works ranging from the 11th Century to the current day.

Andrew Ousley, Death of Classical’s Founder and Artistic Director said in a press release, “We’re absolutely thrilled to continue our subterranean expansion, collaborating with two of New York’s most extraordinary institutions – the magnificent physical and spiritual space that is the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and the transcendent musical presence of Trinity Church and their incredible ensemble NOVUS. These three programs, presented in the remarkable unfinished Crypt chapel beneath the Cathedral, offer three different interpretations of the past, present, and possible future – one that is personal, one that is political, and one that is universal.”

Each performance includes a pre-concert reception with wine and food in the main space of the Cathedral, followed by a walk through the stone quarry before descending to the Crypt. Concerts are held Oct. 11, 12, and 16, respectively.
