Daniel Harding Named Music Director of Youth Music Culture The Greater Bay Area

By Francisco Salazar

The Youth Music Culture The Greater Bay Area has announced the appointment of Daniel Harding as its next Music Director for a five-year term beginning in 2024.

Harding will lead a symphonic program with YMCG participants chosen from conservatories across China and overseas, performing in Guangzhou and in other cities in the Greater Bay Area. The conductor will succeed Yo-Yo Ma, the YMCG’s inaugural Artistic Director, and will work alongside Long Yu.

According to Aksonas Holt, Harding will develop the symphonic program to invite principal musicians from top international orchestras as tutors, mentors, and chamber musicians and to develop the overall program, including welcoming speakers and partners from outside the classical music world.

The maestro is currently the Music and Artistic Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. He has performed at the Teatro alla Scala, Theater an der Wien, Wiener Staatsoper, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and at the Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg Festivals.
