Berlin Philharmonic Announces Conductor Change for Proms & Salzburg Festival Concert

By Francisco Salazar

The Berlin Philharmonic has announced that chief conductor Kirill Petrenko has been forced to cancel concerts in Proms and Salzburg.

The orchestras said, “due to a serious foot injury and subsequent surgery, chief conductor Kirill Petrenko has been ordered by his doctor to take further rest and therefore will not conduct the second of his two Proms with the Berliner Philharmoniker, on Sunday 4 September (Prom 65). He will still conduct the first Prom (Prom 62: Mahler 7th symphony).”

The conductor will also not conduct a concert at the Salzburg Festival. As a result, Daniel Harding will replace him at both events.

Harding is a well-known conductor who is music and artistic director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Orchestre de Paris, London Symphony Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic, among others.
