Daniel Carter to Become General Music Director of Deutsches Nationaltheater

Daniel Carter has been named Generalmusikdirektor of the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar.

He will begin in his new position during the 2025-26 season.

In a statement, the theatre’s management said, “In an intensive selection process with auditions, Daniel Carter was able to distinguish himself as an outstandingly suitable candidate for the Staatskapelle as well as for the ensembles and the team directorship. He impressed with his excellent conducting and the clear communication of his musical vision. We are delighted to welcome Daniel Carter, one of the first-class opera conductors of his generation, to the DNT. “

In his new position, he will help shape the artistic development of the Staatskapelle as an opera orchestra and the further development of the opera ensemble and opera choir through the musical direction of premieres, concerts, revivals, and intensive cultivation of the music theatre ensemble.

Carter is currently the General Music Director at the Landestheater Coburg and conducts regularly at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Carter has also conducted the Staatsoper Hamburg and has served as Principal Conductor at Theater Freiburg.
