Dallas Opera Announces Virtual Summer Camp Program

By David Salazar

The Dallas Opera will be launching a Kids Opera Boot Camp starting on June 29, 2020.

Throughout the free five-episode program, children and their families will have access to the Brothers Grimm story of “The Bremen Town Musicians.” Students will get a chance to learn how to create an opera through numerous activities. Students will also learn to sing vocal warm-ups and even an excerpt from the opera.

The Boot Camp will culminate in a performance of the opera by the Dallas Opera Education Artists.

School Districts will have the option of incorporating the Boot Camp into their summer curricula. Those who register will have access to the content throughout the summer.

“Traditional forms of watching and experiencing opera are having to take a pause. During this pause, we can still use the power of the art form to address meaningful issues,” stated Kristian Roberts, who was recently appointed to Director of Education with the company. “The story’s theme of using your unique skills and working together with those who are different to reach a common goal is more relevant now than ever,” she adds. “Everyone—kid or adult—can relate to this message in some way and learn important lessons that can be applied to their own lives.”
