Coro Allegro to Present ‘Luminous Rescue: Psalms of Protest and Reconciliation’

By David Salazar

Coro Allegro, Boston’s LGBTQ+ and allied classical chorus, will close its season with “Luminous Rescue: Psalms of Protest and Reconciliation” on Sunday, May 17 at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Covenant in Boston.

Led by Artistic Director David Hodgkins, the program features Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms,” Charles Ives’s “Psalm 90,” and Patricia Van Ness’s “Psalms of Luminous Rescue.” The Van Ness work, originally commissioned by Coro Allegro in 2018, returns in a substantially revised version. Guest artists include organist Jerrick Cavagnaro and soprano Janet Stone.

“Coro Allegro’s ‘Psalms of Luminous Rescue’ presents three works by celebrated American composers Patricia Van Ness, Charles Ives, and Leonard Bernstein – simultaneously giving a nod to the America’s 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States – while offering hope and solace to all in the current turbulent times in which we live,” Artistic Director David Hodgkins told OperaWire. “Each musical journey superimposes dramatic moments of conflict and anguish with reflective moments of healing, joy, and peace, The goal of the concert is perhaps best summed up in the final phrase of the concert: (Psalm 133, vs. 1) ‘Behold how good, and how pleasant it is for everyone to dwell together in unity.'”

As part of the event, Coro Allegro will present its 2025 Pinkham Award to Reuben Reynolds, Artistic Director of the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus, in recognition of his leadership and contributions to LGBTQ+ choral life.
