Conductor René Jacobs to Lead Final Concert of Orfeo Week

By David Salazar

Conductor René Jacobs is set to present selections from “Orfeo ed Euridice” on Dec. 3 at the Teatro alle Vigne in Lodi.

The concert represents the Italian comeback for the conductor and will take place during the second edition of Orfeo Week. The showcase will be dedicated to Gaetano Guadagni, the castrato for whom Gluck wrote the famed opera.

Jacobs will be joined by countertenor Raffaele Pe, soprano Alice Medoddu, La Lira di Orfeo, the Coro de La Lira di Orfeo Academy, and Jacopo Raffaele on the harpsichord.

“This is a surprise that left me speechless, Pe said in an official press release. “Initially René Jacobs was scheduled to be here only for Gaetano Guadagni’s celebrations. I feel deeply honored by his decision to conduct our final concert. To me he is a model: as a countertenor, he was one of the first modern interpreters of Gluck’s masterpiece, and his research on this kind of vocal expression spans over many years.”

In addition to the concert, Jacobs will deliver a masterclass on Dec. 2 and will also be in attendance when a commemorative plaque in honor of Guadagni is placed on the Public Library.

Orfeo Week started on Nov. 25 and runs through Dec. 3.
