Carriage Works & Sydney Chamber Opera to Present Online Premiere of ‘Breaking Glass’

By David Salazar

Australian-based companies Carriageworks and Sydney Chamber Opera will present the online world premiere of “Breaking Glass” on Saturday, April 26, 2020 at 7:30 p.m. local time.

“Breaking Glass” is a compilation of four operas by Australian female composers Peggy Polias, Josephine Macken, Georgia Scott and Bree van Reyk.

Polias is the composer of “Commute,” Macken created “The Tent;” Plath created “Her Dark Marauder;“ and Bree Van Reyk made “The Invisible Bird.” He works feature four vocal artists including Jane Sheldon, Jessica O’Donoghue, Mitchell Riley and Simon Lobelson.

“Breaking Glass” is presented in partnership with Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s Composing Women Program and audiences can watch the works via Carriageworks Facebook page.

The premiere of the works was originally set for late March, but the spread of COVID-19 forced the closure of all theaters, thus postponing the premiere. Fortunately, the companies had been able to record the production in full prior to the closing.

“The editing process has been a great challenge to marry audio recordings to video documentation, but we are immensely proud of the result and, even though it is a shame not to get the opportunity to perform to a live audience, it felt like both an enormous risk and privilege to be making something out of nothing when many around us were losing hope and the world was shutting down,” said Sydney Chambers Opera Artistic Director Jack Symonds in a press release.
