The Royal Opera House Covent Garden has announced that tenor Bryan Hymel has withdrawn from all the scheduled performances of Puccini’s “Tosca” due to indisposition.

Accordingly, multiple cast changes have been made. Italian tenor Riccardo Massi will perform the role of Cavaradossi on Dec. 14 at 7:30 p. m. GMT, replacing British-Italian tenor Freddie De Tommaso. De Tommaso will perform the role on Dec. 15 at 7:30 p. m., replacing Bryan Hymel. The performance will be relayed live from 7:15 p. m. to cinemas around the world, with encore screenings from Jan. 19, 2022.

Finally, De Tommaso will again replace Hymel on Dec. 19 and 22, 2021.

Massi and De Tommaso join a cast that includes Alexey Markov and Claudio Sgura as Scarpia, and Elena Stikhina and Anna Pirozzi in the title role. Oksana Lyniv conducts a production by Jonathan Kent.

Hymel is scheduled to go back to the stage in the role of Des Grieux in Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” at the Ópera de Las Palmas in February 2022.
