It has been announced that French-Moroccan baritone, director, and producer David Serero was awarded BroadwayWorld’s “Best Opera Singer” award for 2020.

The results were announced on January 15, 2021, following weeks of voting from the public as well as industry insiders.

Serero is noted for his decades of work, having done over 2500 performance across 45 countries, playing leading roles in over 50 roles in the opera, theatre, and musical repertoires, as well as directing and producing over 100 theatrical productions. In 2020, he was awarded the UNESCO Award for Diversity in Paris and became an honorary member of the United Nations of Arts and Science.

He has brought opera to places such as hospitals, prisons, schools, and more. Among his upcoming endeavors will be to create the first Royal Opera Company in Morocco.

“This award is very special to me as it recognizes that there is also a space for opera in the off-Broadway scene, that New York opera is not just at the Met, but there are many quality productions with various budgets but with high creativity prospects that offer something that no one can see elsewhere,” Serero told OperaWire. “This BroadwayWorld Award also represents the trust I have among all my essential partners and audience who allow me to perform, for which I’m eternally grateful: To live my American Dream every day!”
