Welcome back for this week’s look at the latest CD and DVD releases in the opera world.

This week, audiences will be able to hear several rarely performed baroque works as well as a Wagner work and a celebration of Angela Gheorghiu’s landmark recordings.

Arvo Pärt: And I heard a voice

Estonian vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis and their leader Jaan-Eik Tulve release a new album on the ECM New Series.

The album includes “And I heard a voice,” recorded in Haapsalu Cathedral, Estonia.

Campra’s Requiem & Miserere

Les Arts Florissants joins forces with legendary founder and artistic director William Christie for a landmark release: the first complete recording of André Campra’s Requiem, paired with his Miserere.

La Gloria e Imeneo

Naïve classiques releases La Gloria e Imeneo (Serenata RV 687), the 73rd volume in its ambitious Vivaldi Edition, a series conceived to record the Foà-Giordano collection housed at the Biblioteca Nazionale in Turin, where nearly 450 works of Vivaldi were rediscovered in the early 20th century. Andrea Buccarella prepared this Serenata for soprano, alto, strings, and basso continuo for his Abchordis Ensemble and soloists, mezzo-soprano Teresa Iervolino and countertenor Carlo Vistoli, resuming an exploration of Vivaldi’s lesser-known works after the ensemble’s acclaimed release of the Serenata a tre in 2023.

Weaving Eternity

Under the direction of Dominick DiOrio, Notus records a new album that gathers works by five composers whose styles range from radiant abstraction to folkloric murmur, unified by a shared sense of harmonic color. The album features music by Gabriel Jenks, Don Freund, Dale Trumbore, Dominick DiOrio, and Zanaida Stewart Robles.

Ravel Paris 2025

Naïve Classiques releases a three-CD box set of works by Maurice Ravel, recorded by the Orchestre National de France and its Music Director, Cristian Măcelaru, at a days-long festival in Paris.

Tosca 

This 2-CD set represents a re-release of the 2000 recording of Puccini’s “Tosca” with Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna, Ruggero Raimondi, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, under Antonio Pappano’s leadership.

W. A. Mozart: Idomeneo

Andrew Staples, Magdalena Kožená, Sabine Devieilhe, and Elsa Dreisig star in a recording of Mozart’s work, which was made in connection with the concert performances on Dec.16, 17, and 19, 2023 in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz. The Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks are conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. BR Klasisk releases.

Richard Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer

Naxos releases a recording of Wagner’s early work with Brian Mulligan, Jennifer Holloway, Bryan Register, Ain Anger, Richard Trey Smagur, and Maya Yahav Gour. The Netherlands Radio Choir and Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus, and Orchestra are conducted by Jaap van Zweden.

Camille Saint-Saëns: L’Ancêtre

Jennifer Holloway, Gaëlle Arquez, Hélène Carpentier, Julien Henric, Michael Arivony, and Matthieu Lécroart star in a new recording of Saint-Saëns’ rarely performed opera. The Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and The Philharmonic Chorus of Tokyo are conducted by Kazuki Yamada.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: L’Enlèvement du Sérail

Chateau de Versailles releases Mozart’s opera with a cast that includes Florie Valiquette, Matthias Vidal, Gwendoline Blondeel, Enguerrand de Hys, and Nicolas Brooymans. The Chœur & Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal will be conducted by Gaétan Jarry.

Rameau: Castor et Pollux

Judith van Wanroij, Véronique Gens, Reinoud van Mechelen, Tassis Christoyannis, Olivia Doray, Hasnaa Bennani, Jehanne Amzal, David Witczak, and Attila Varga Tóth. The Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir is conducted by György Vashegyi.
