Brooklyn’s Roulette will present “Lexia, an AI Opera in One Act.
Taking place in AD 2225, the opera follows Lexia, who is in search of her son in a hostile United States where The Committee rules via an AI device called The Lung that builds data banks to write history’s collective memory. During her journey, Lexia comes to realize that genetic mutation is causing human babies to be born with the characteristics of birds. The opera by Scott Deal is described as a parable about “artificial intelligence, climate catastrophe, and extraordinary transformation, told through the eyes of the Lexia, a nomadic doula living two hundred years in the future in the American Northwest.”
“Lexia” stars Tony Arnold in the title role and will be directed by librettist Kat Mustatea. AI programming will be by Jason Palamara.
The project is sponsored by Indiana University’s Presidential Arts and Humanities Program, with additional support from the Donald Tavel Arts and Technology Research Center; and the Machine Musician Lab, Indiana University Indianapolis.
The Feb. 14, 2025 opening at Roulette kicks off at 7 p.m.
