Roulette to Present ‘Foreign Experiences’

By David Salazar

Brooklyn-based Roulette is set to present Robert Ashley’s “Foreign Experiences” starting on May 9.

The three-performance run, which comes to a close on May 11, will be the first full performance of the opera since 1995.

The work is part of Ashley’s operatic tetralogy “Now Eleanor,” which dates from the early 1990s. The work follows Don who leaves the Midwest to start working at a small college in California where his entire life is upended.

The opera stars Gelsey Bell, Kayleigh Butcher, Bonnie Lander, Brian McCorkle, Paul Pinto, Dave Ruder, and Aliza Simons. Tom Hamilton conducts and David Moodey is the stage and lighting designer.

The opera has a duration of 72 minutes.
