The Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires has named Chile’s Andrés Rodríguez as its new Director of Opera.

The Ministry of Culture of the city of Buenos Aires announced the news on Sept. 27 and noted that Rodríguez will take the position next year.

A noted lawyer and cultural advocate, Rodríguez will be responsible for the opera programming at the famed theater alongside the company’s general director Gerardo Grieco.

He will also join Julio Bocca, who will be in charge of the ballet for the theater.

Gabriela Ricardes, Minister of Culture of Buenos Aires, said, “We are very proud to announce the arrival of Andrés Rodríguez to the Theater’s artistic direction team. Recognized worldwide for his career, Andrés will add his experience and his human quality, and will be an enormous contribution to the excellence and artistic rigor of our talents.”

Rodríguez studied at the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice and was the Artistic and General Director for the Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile. During his time at the theater, he was able to present such artist as Claudio Arrau, Daniel Barenboim, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lang Lang, Evgeny Kissim, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Renee Fleming.
