Teatro Colón Director Ousted by Ministry of Culture

The Minister of Culture of Buenos Aires has relieved the Teatro Colón’s Jorge Telerman of his duties as director.

Telerman took to social media to make the announcement, noting that “the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires has communicated to me that it will replace me as director of the Teatro Colón. For me, and my collaborators, it has been an immense and unforgettable honor to lead the destiny of this great institution, during the last two-and-a-half years. In this time the Teatro Colón has seen a number of successes that we are proud of.”

Telerman goes on to cite the development of new audiences, sold-out shows, diverse programming, and an increase in resources, among other benchmarks.

“I am profoundly grateful to the hundreds of women and men who have made this and will continue to make this possible,” he concluded his X (formerly Twitter) thread.

Per La Nación, Telerman was brought on in 2022 by Horacio Rodríguez Larreta. However, since the arrival of Minister of Culture Gabriela Ricardes, his days were seemingly numbered, especially given that Telerman had supported the opposition during the previous election. There were also questions about budget cuts to accommodate austerity measures by Argentina’s new administration.
