Britten Pears Arts Announces Autumn 2024 Season

Britten Pears Arts has released the details of its Autumn 2024 season.

Only opera and vocal events are included in this article.

Singers and instrumentalists from the Composition and Performance course present Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire” in a masterclass led by soprano Claire Booth and conductor Jonathan Berman.

Performance Date: September 17, 2024 (Peter Pears Recital Room)

The “End of Course Concert: Composition and Performance” showcases the developing pieces from composers of the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme. Excerpts from “Pierrot Lunaire” are presented.

Performance Date: September 22, 2024 (Britten Studio)

Judith Weir’s “Blond Eckbert,” stars Alex Otterburn, Aoife Miskelly, Flora McIntosh, and William Morgan. It is presented on a double bill with “Do Not Take my Story for a Fairytale,” a staging of song cycles and cantatas exploring love, isolation, and the wonder of the natural world. It will be performed by a period instrument ensemble with Abigail Kelly, Amy J Payne, Matthew McKinney, and Mark Nathan. Both performances are conducted by Gerry Cornelius, with direction by Robin Norton-Hale.

Olivia Fuchs directs English Touring Opera’s new production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Snowmaiden.” Hannah Quinn conducts the cast of Ffion Edwards, Kitty Whateley, Katherine McIndoe, Edmund Danon, Hannah Sandison, Edward Hawkins, Joseph Doody, Jack Dolan, Amy J Payne, David Horton, Neil Balfour, and Alexandra Meier. The performance will be recorded for later streaming into schools around the country in partnership with Norfolk & Suffolk Music Hub

The Britten Pears Chamber Choir (formerly Aldeburgh Voices) presents three contrasting choral mass settings by Britten, Kodály, and Tavener from across five centuries.

Performance Date: November 2, 2024 (Orford Church)

Mezzo-soprano Mathilde Ortscheidt and Viola Tunnard Artist award-winner and pianist Juliette Journaux present a program of Mahler, Britten, and Elgar.

Performance Date: November 3, 2024 (The Red House)

“In Somnia” is presented by mezzo-soprano Marta Fontanals-Simmons and pianist Lana Bode. The program features song cycles by Frederic Mompou and Ethel Smyth interspersed with songs from 20th-and 21st-century composers.

Ben Vonberg-Clark directs the Scratch Choir in Fauré’s “Requiem.”

Performance Date: November 9, 2024 (Snape Maltings Concert Hall)

A special recital commemorating Benjamin Britten’s birthday is performed by soprano Francesca Chiejina, mezzo-soprano Bethany Horak-Hallett, and pianist Natalie Birch, featuring songs drawn from their recent album, “Our Indifferent Century.”

Performance Date: November 22, 2024 (Library, The Red House)

Anna Lapwood conducts the Chapel Choir of Pembroke College, Cambridge in a performance of Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols” and a new work written in response to it, Kristina Arakelyan’s “Angel of Light.”

Performance Date: December 7, 2024 (Snape Maltings Concert Hall)

Soprano Laura Wright alongside pianist Dan Moriyama, percussionist Lauren Kosty, guitarist Andy Moore, the Britten Pears Chamber Choir, and The Band of the Royal British Legion, Leiston continue the holiday festivities.

Performance Date: December 14, 2024 (Snape Maltings Concert Hall)

Howard Blake’s “The Snowman” is performed by the Suffolk Ensemble and a chorus of young singers including Group A. Ben Parry conducts.

Performance Date: December 15, 2024 (Snape Maltings Concert Hall)

Scratch Choir returns in a concert of festive repertoire. Ben Vonberg-Clark conducts.
