To celebrate composer Steve Reich’s 90th birthday on Oct. 3, 2026, The Glasshouse will host “Steve Reich at 90,” a festival weekend featuring some of his most iconic works.

The weekend will feature concerts, installations, and talks offering people the chance to experience Reich’s music in bold and immersive ways. The Royal Northern Sinfonia and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra will perform some of Reich’s classical works.

Reich has written countless works that have proven influential in both the classical and other genres. Some of his classical vocal works are “Tehillim,” “Traveler’s Prayer,” “Jacob’s Ladder,” and most notably, “The Desert Music” for chorus and orchestra or voices and ensemble. In the 1990s, Reich and Beryl Korot collaborated on the operas, “The Cave” and “Three Tales.”

James Thomas, Executive Director, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Classical Music, said in a press release, “Steve Reich is one of the most influential composers of our time and his 90th birthday is a moment to celebrate his legacy. At The Glasshouse, we’re committed to bringing world-class events to the North East – Steve Reich at 90 is exactly that: ambitious, immersive and unlike anything else in the UK.”

The celebration will take place from Oct. 2 -4, 2026 at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music.
