Youngstown Symphony Orchestra Announces Resignation of Music Director

By Francisco Salazar

Ohio’s Youngstown Symphony Orchestra has announced that Music Director and conductor Sergey Bogza has resigned from his post.

In a statement by the Youngstown Symphony Society, the organization said that Bogza resigned effective Thursday due to “personal, health and family reasons.”

Bogza signed a three-year contract in June following two years of auditioning guest conductors.

Kelly Sullivan, artistic services manager for the Youngstown Symphony Society, said there was no timetable for hiring a replacement  and added, “We haven’t crossed that bridge yet.”

In the press release, Matt Pagac, chief executive and operating officer of the society, said, “Though Sergey’s circumstances prevent him from serving as the YSO music director, we are grateful to have met and engaged with him for a short time. We wish him well.”

Bogza became the Music Director and Conductor of the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra in 2016 and has conducted such orchestras as the Minnesota Orchestra, Virginia Beach Symphony, Pazardzhik Symphony Orchestra, Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra, Auburn Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra, and Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra.
