Wiener Staatsoper Unveils Herbert Brandl ‘Iron Curtain’
By Francisco SalazarThe Wiener Staatsoper has unveiled a posthumous work by Austrian artist Herbert Brandl as its 2026-27 “Iron Curtain.”
The 176-square-meter painting is attached with magnets to the fireproof wall of the opera stage and can be viewed by the audience throughout an entire season—before and after performances, as well as during intermissions.
Brandl, who passed away in 2025, had his painting selected by a jury. The work was unveiled on Sept. 9 at the opening of the season.
Brandl was an Austrian painter, who was part of the Junge Wilde trend, sticking to traditional media. His mostly large paintings in bright colours, abstract landscapes inspired by nature, became part of major collections such as the Albertina in Vienna, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.
The Wiener Staatsoper is currently performing productions of “Don Carlo,” “Le Nozze di Figaro” and “La Clemenza di Tito.”
