The Wiener Staatsoper has announced a cast change for its Jan. 12 performance of “Cavalleria Rusticana.”

The company said that Luciano Ganci will sing the role of Turiddu replacing Jonathan Tetelman.

Tetelman took to social media and said, “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I must withdraw from the first performance of ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’ at the Vienna Staatsoper. During this highly infectious time, I have caught a tricky tracheitis whose effects have forced me to make this heartbreaking decision.”

He added, “I am improving at a steady rate but I want to be there for my debut on the stage of the Vienna Staatsoper with good health and strength. I sincerely apologize to all of my friends and fans who were expecting my performance this coming Sunday. Your support is so comforting and I am deeply grateful for your kindness and understanding. Thank you wishing you all good health!”

Ganci, who recently performed in the Teatro alla Scala’s “La Forza del Destino” will join a cast that includes Elīna Garanča, Elena Zaremba, Adam Plachetka, and Anita Monserrat. “Pagliacci,” which will be performed as part of the double bill, will include Jonas Kaufmann and Maria Agresta. Nicola Luisotti conducts the production by Jean-Pierre Ponelle.

Tetelman returns for the performance on Jan. 15, 2025.
