West Edge Opera Announces 2019 Snapshot Series
By Francisco SalazarThe West Edge Opera has announced its snapshot program, which is dedicated to getting new operas on their feet from west coast composers and librettists.
This season the program will feature celebrated soprano Marnie Breckenridge singing Nathaniel Stookey’s haunting monodrama, “Ivonne,” with a libretto by Jerre Dye.
Then Cindy Cox, chair of the UC Berkeley Music Department, and librettist John Campion will present an excerpt of their hybrid music theater piece, “The Road To Xibalba.”
Composer Shinji Eshima will also join forces with librettist Tony Asaro to showcase excerpts from their new opera about San Francisco mezzo-soprano and Adler Fellow Zheng Cao.
The final work that will be presented will be Beth Ratay’s “Medicus Mortem,” with a libretto by Andrew Rechnitz.
Snapshot founder Brian M. Rosen said in a press release, “We’re thrilled to present the work of so many Bay Area composers at various stages of their careers. Creating new opera, even those modest in scope, is a massive undertaking and we’re proud to provide opportunities for creators to see their work in a concert environment while allowing the public a glimpse into the future of the form.”
The performances will be held on Jan. 19 through 20, 2019.
