“Iphigenia” will make its world premiere premiere in the fall of 2021.

The new opera is composed by Wayne Shorter & Esperanza Spalding is based on the myths by Euripides and will be a subversive and daring interrogation of the tale of the sacrificial daughter of Greece. It will also represent the first foray into classical music for Shorter.

The opera is set to be toured throughout the U.S. following its premiere in the fall.

Real Magic, a company formed by Spalding and Iphigenia’s executive creative producer Jeff Tang, has worked in partnership with producer Cath Brittan and with Mara Isaacs of Octopus Theatricals, along with the support of several co-commissioning partners, to develop the opera.

There will be an Indiegogo campaign launched on April 30 to financially assist in the creation of “Iphigenia,” in tandem with a major gifts campaign, to secure additional funding to reach the final project goal. The Indiegogo campaign offers fans and friends the opportunity to directly support the opera and also to stay connected to the project through backer perks, including access to virtual opportunities such as the final musical workshop and a Q and A with the creative team.
