By Francisco Salazar

The Washington Opera Society has canceled its holiday performance of the “Countess Maritza” at the Embassy of Egypt due to a COVID outbreak among the cast.

The company noted, “it would be irresponsible to proceed under these circumstances. All ticket buyers will be reimbursed and anyone wishing to convert their tickets into a contribution will receive a letter for your tax records.”

Kálmán’s “Countess Maritza” was set to be performed on Dec. 17 and to star Suzanne Karpov, Michael Butler, Kira Neary, Maggie Polglaze, Allan Palacios Chan, Henrique Carvalho, and Beth Madeline Rubens. Julien Benichou was set to conduct.

The Washington Opera Society recently performed a Hanukkah and Christmas Concert and a fundraiser. The company is set to announce its 2022 season in the coming weeks.
