Uma Thurman will appear in André Previn and Tom Stoppard’s “Penelope.”

The unfinished work will be presented at Tanglewood on July 24, 2019 and will also feature soprano Renée Fleming, the Emerson String Quartet, and pianist Simone Dinnerstein. Thurman will take on a newly-created part of the Narrator.

The work, which was originally dedicated to Fleming, was left unfinished at the time of Previn’s passing on Feb. 28, 2019. Its premiere was meant as a celebration of his 90th birthday, but will now be dedicated to his life and music.

After Previn’s passing, his son Matthew Previn took the remaining sketches and pages of the manuscript to the late composer’s copyist David Fetherolf to create a working score. However, Previn had left a number of alternate versions and settings of some passages of texts, making it clear that he was still deciding whether certain parts would be spoken or sung. Eventually, Fetherolf worked with Fleming, Dinnerstein, and the Emerson Quartet’s Eugene Drucker to compile the version of the score that will be showcased to the public.

“After the loss this winter of my dear friend, the great André Previn, I’m overjoyed that we are indeed able give his last work its world premiere at Tanglewood,” said Renée Fleming in a statement. “With the addition of the incomparable Uma Thurman to the performance with the Emerson String Quartet and pianist Simone Dinnerstein, I know we can give André’s beautiful music and Tom Stoppard’s brilliant text the performance André would want.”
