Ukrainians have vowed not to perform at the International Wiesbaden May Festival if Anna Netrebko performs.

According to reports out of Wiesbaden, the  Ukrainian Consul General in Hesse, Vadym Kostiuk, said, Ukrainians are not allowed to perform in the same place as Netrebko due to sanctions imposed on the soprano in Ukraine.

The report also noted that the Director of the Wiesbaden, Uwe Eric Laufenberg said that the Taras Shevchenko Theater from Kharkiv and the Ukrainian National Orchestra did not complain about Netrebko’s performance upon hearing about it.

However, the state of Hesse and the city of Wiesbaden said that neither institution knew about Netrebko’s planned performances and that the sanction list did not exist.

When the Staatstheater Wiesbaden announced its festival, outrage ensued due to Netrebko’s planned performances of “Nabucco” and the theme of “political prisoners.” Additionally, the aforementioned Ukrainian institutions were supposed to perform.

Netrebko was put on the Ukrainian sanctions list earlier this month even though she has repeatedly condemned the war and has been banned from performing in her native country of Russia and was called a traitor.
