Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra to Present Concert at Teatr Wielki

By Francisco Salazar

The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra has announced a new concert under the baton of founder and music director, Keri-Lynn Wilson.

The concert will be held on Feb. 25, 2025, at the Teatr Wielki.

It will mark the third anniversary of Russia’s brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine in a continuing demonstration of Ukrainian artistry as the nation fights for its freedom. The program will feature the orchestra’s version of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with the unique feature of its choral text, Schiller’s great cry of freedom, resistance, and progress against the forces of oppression in the form of his poem “Ode to Joy,” sung by the soloists and chorus in Ukrainian.

The concert will be livestreamed by arte.tv across Europe and broadcast in Ukraine. Arte will also broadcast the concert on TV in early March and the film will stream on PBS.org and the PBS App beginning March 6, and will broadcast on PBS stations on Friday, March 28 at 10:30 p.m. ET.

In a statement, Wilson said, “Whether it’s three years or 30 years, our mission to defend Ukraine’s culture and its brave people shall carry on. It’s so right that we gather once again in Warsaw’s Teatr Wielki, our home away from home, to send our musical message for Ukraine’s liberty to the world. In our Ukrainian-language version of Beethoven’s Ninth’s ‘Ode to Joy,’ we sing ‘Slava’ for the glory of a free Ukraine. Our support for our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in their fight for democracy shall never falter.”
