Conductor, keyboardist, and musicologist Tyson Deaton has announced the completion and publication of a five-volume critical edition of songs by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

Deaton finalized the project in 2025 after nearly four years of research and editorial work.

The edition brings together nearly 100 songs for voice and keyboard and represents the first modern performing edition of Bologne de Saint-George’s principal song output. Many of the works have been unavailable to performers and scholars for more than two centuries. The final volumes were released in late 2025. The project is based on extensive archival research and includes newly attributed texts, modernized and translated archaic French from original sources, and critical commentary addressing Bologne de Saint-George’s compositional style and historical context.

Research for the edition was supported by the Lanie and Ethel Foundation and fiscally sponsored by Los Angeles Opera. Grant funding enabled archival work at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris in September 2024, contributing to the identification and verification of primary sources related to Bologne de Saint-George’s musical activity in late eighteenth-century France.

“The completion of this edition has been profoundly rewarding,” said Deaton, per an official press release. “Beyond assembling the nearly 100 songs, the project involved intensive investigative work to identify unattributed texts across a wide range of literary and musical sources.”

Deaton is scheduled to record a selection of the songs in summer 2026, with a release planned for early 2027. Additional publications of works by Joseph Bologne de Saint-George are currently in development.

The edition is distributed exclusively by Classical Vocal Reprints.
